Le texteThe Salmon of Knowledge
Long ago, in Ireland, there is a magic salmon in the River Boyne. People say: « The first person who eats this fish will know everything. » An old poet, Finnegas, wants this knowledge. He tries to catch the salmon for seven years. One day, he catches it! He gives the fish to his young helper, Finn, and he says: « Cook it, but don't eat it! » Finn cooks the salmon very carefully. Suddenly, he burns his thumb on the hot fish. Ouch! He puts his thumb in his mouth. When Finnegas comes back, he looks at the boy's eyes. They are bright and clever. Finn tells him the story. The old poet is not angry: he gives the whole salmon to Finn. From that day, when Finn has a problem, he puts his thumb in his mouth and he knows the answer.
