La forme interrogative

Pour poser une question, on inverse is/are et there.

Exemple. Is there a bathroom upstairs?
Are there any pets in your house?
Astuce. Réponse courte : Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
4

Some et any

Some et any signifient « des / du / de la » et accompagnent souvent there is/are.

Type de phraseMot utilisé
Affirmativesome
Négativeany
Interrogativeany
Exemple. There are some apples in the fridge. (affirmatif)
There aren't any apples in the fridge. (négatif)
Are there any apples in the fridge? (interrogatif)
Astuce. Pour dire « beaucoup », on emploie many devant un nom dénombrable pluriel (many chairs) et much devant un indénombrable (much water) ; a lot of fonctionne dans les deux cas.
5

There is/are vs it is/they are

Ne confonds pas there is/are (pour annoncer l'existence de quelque chose) et it is/they are (pour décrire quelque chose de déjà connu).

StructureUsage
There is a cat in the garden.on annonce l'existence du chat
It is black and white.on décrit ce chat déjà mentionné
Attention ! « There is a cat, it is black » : la première fois qu'on parle d'une chose, on utilise there is ; ensuite, on utilise it/they pour la redécrire.
