Fiche méthode
(Anglais 6ᵉ · Outils de la langue · Dire ce qu’il y a (A1))
La démarche pour dire « il y a »
1. Je regarde le nom qui suit : singulier ou indénombrable → there is ; pluriel → there are.
2. Je choisis la forme : affirmative (there is), négative (there isn’t / aren’t), question (Is / Are there…?).
3. Pour répondre, je reprends there + is / are : Yes, there are. No, there isn’t.
4. Pour décrire ensuite la chose annoncée, je passe à it is / they are.
Cas 1 · There is ou there are ?
Réflexe — le nom qui suit décide : singulier ou indénombrable → is, pluriel → are.
Exemple 1. Compléter : « ___ six eggs in the box. »
six eggs est un pluriel.
There are six eggs in the box.
Exemple 2. Compléter : « ___ a lot of snow today. »
snow est indénombrable : singulier.
There is a lot of snow today.
Attention — « There are a museum » : a museum est singulier → There is a museum.
Cas 2 · La négation, la question et la réponse courte
Réflexe — négation : isn’t / aren’t ; question : Is / Are there… ? ; réponse : Yes, there is / No, there aren’t.
Exemple 1. Mettre à la forme négative : « There is a hospital in the town. »
Singulier : isn’t.
There isn’t a hospital in the town.
Exemple 2. Poser la question et répondre non : « There are towels in the bathroom. »
Pluriel : Are there ; réponse courte avec aren’t.
Are there any towels in the bathroom? — No, there aren’t.
Attention — « Does there is a park? » : Is there a park?

Cas 3 · There is ou it is ?
Réflexe — on annonce → there is / are ; on décrit → it is / they are.
Exemple 1. Traduire : « Il y a un message pour toi. Il est de ta grand-mère. »
On annonce le message, puis on le décrit.
There is a message for you. It is from your grandmother.
Exemple 2. Compléter avec there, their ou they’re : « The children forgot ___ coats. »
Leurs manteaux : possessif.
The children forgot their coats.
Attention — « It is a mouse in the kitchen » pour « il y a » : There is a mouse in the kitchen.
Les pièges
- « There is two cats » : There are two cats.
- « There are a lot of traffic » : traffic est indénombrable → There is a lot of traffic.
- « There have a garden » : There is a garden.
- « Is there any shops? » : Are there any shops?
- « Yes, there’s. » : Yes, there is.
