The four themes
- Languages : langues, codes, musique, images, langue des signes.
- School and society : école, règles, droits, orientation, métiers.
- Travel and migration : voyages, émigration, réfugiés, intégration.
- Encounters with other cultures : fêtes, nourriture, traditions, patrimoine.
- Un document relève souvent de deux thématiques.

Languages
- a language, a mother tongue, a native speaker, to be fluent in, bilingual, an accent, slang, to mean, to translate, sign language, lyrics, a symbol.

School and society
- a pupil, a rule, to break a rule, a right, a duty, a uniform, homework (indén.), detention, a boarding school, a head teacher, to take / pass / fail an exam.
- must / have to (obligation), mustn't (interdiction), can / be allowed to (permission), don't have to (pas obligé).

Travel and migration
- a journey (trajet), a trip (séjour), to go abroad (sans to), a flight, a border, a visa.
- to emigrate (partir) / to immigrate (arriver), an immigrant, a refugee, an asylum seeker, to flee, to settle, to fit in, to feel at home, homesick, a newcomer.
- I miss my country = mon pays me manque.
- Repères : Ellis Island (1892-1954), Windrush (1948).

Encounters with other cultures
- a custom, a tradition, heritage, to celebrate, a parade, a dish, a recipe, a culture shock, open-minded / narrow-minded, to be used to + V-ing.
- Fêtes : Thanksgiving (USA, 4e jeudi de novembre), Bonfire Night (UK, 5 novembre), Halloween (31 octobre), Diwali (Inde / UK), Notting Hill Carnival (Londres, août), Saint Patrick's Day (Irlande, 17 mars).

- Repérer la thématique avant de lire donne le vocabulaire attendu.
- Règles : must / have to, mustn't, can, don't have to ; comparer : -er / more… than, as… as, the -est / the most.
