Au programme : Les quatre thématiques culturelles du cycle 4, Languages : langues, codes, musique, images, School and society : école, règles, droits, Travel and migration : voyager, partir, s'installer.
| Thématique | In English | Questions typiques |
|---|
| Langages | Languages | Why do people learn languages? What does this symbol mean? |
| École et société | School and society | What are the rules? What are your rights? What job would you like? |
| Voyages et migrations | Travel and migration | Why did they leave? Where did they settle? What did they miss? |
| Rencontres avec d'autres cultures | Encounters with other cultures | How is this festival celebrated? What is different from France? |
Astuce. Note les deux : cela guide ta lecture.

Languages : langues, codes, musique, images
| English | Français | English | Français |
|---|
| a mother tongue / a native speaker | une langue maternelle / un locuteur natif | to be fluent in / to be bilingual | parler couramment / être bilingue |
Exemple. English is spoken by about 1.5 billion people, but only 400 million are native speakers. Sign languages are different from one country to another: British Sign Language is not the same as American Sign Language.
Attention ! Language (avec u) ≠ langage. What does « gap year » mean? (jamais What means…?). To speak une langue, to say un mot, to tell quelqu'un.
3
School and society : école, règles, droits
| English | Français | English | Français |
|---|
| to take an exam / to pass / to fail | passer / réussir / rater un examen | a school council / to vote | un conseil des élèves / voter |
| Modal | Sens | Exemple |
|---|
| must / have to | obligation | Pupils must switch off their phones. |
| mustn't | interdiction | You mustn't run in the corridors. |
| can / be allowed to | permission | Year 11 pupils can leave at lunchtime. |
| don't have to | pas d'obligation | We don't have to wear a tie on Fridays. |
Exemple. In British schools, pupils have to wear a uniform and mustn't dye their hair bright colours, but they can join dozens of clubs.
4
Travel and migration : voyager, partir, s'installer
Règle. Deux réalités : le voyage (a trip, a journey, to travel abroad) et la migration (to emigrate = quitter son pays, to immigrate = arriver dans un pays, a migrant, a refugee). Les récits de migration se font au prétérit et au present perfect (has lived here since).
| English | Français | English | Français |
|---|
| a journey / a trip / a flight | un voyage (trajet) / un séjour / un vol | to emigrate / to immigrate | émigrer / immigrer |
| abroad (sans to) | à l'étranger | an immigrant / a refugee / an asylum seeker | un immigré / un réfugié / un demandeur d'asile |
| to settle (in) / to move (to) | s'installer / déménager | to leave one's country / to flee | quitter son pays / fuir |
| to miss (somebody / something) | regretter, avoir la nostalgie de | to fit in / to adapt / to feel at home | s'intégrer / s'adapter / se sentir chez soi |
Attention ! To go abroad, jamais to abroad. I miss my country = mon pays me manque (sujet inversé par rapport au français).
5
Encounters with other cultures : fêtes, traditions, différences
Règle. Cette thématique explore les fêtes, la nourriture, les coutumes et le patrimoine du monde anglophone, et invite à comparer avec la France : comparatifs, superlatifs, as… as, different from, similar to.
| Festival | Where / when | What people do |
|---|
| Thanksgiving | USA, 4th Thursday of November | family dinner with turkey, giving thanks |
| Bonfire Night | UK, 5 November | fireworks and bonfires (Guy Fawkes, 1605) |
| Halloween | 31 October | costumes, trick-or-treating, pumpkins |
| Diwali | India and the UK, October-November | festival of lights, sweets, lamps |
| Notting Hill Carnival | London, late August | Caribbean music, costumes, parades |
| Saint Patrick's Day | Ireland (and the world), 17 March | parades, green clothes, shamrocks |
| English | Français |
|---|
| to be used to + V-ing / to get used to | avoir l'habitude de / s'habituer à |
Exemple. Bonfire Night is less famous than Halloween in France, but in Britain it is as popular as Halloween. British food is different from French food: people eat dinner earlier, around six.

Les outils transversaux : modaux, comparatifs, pièges francophones

| superlatif | the biggest, the easiest, the hottest | the most popular, the most expensive |
| égalité / infériorité | as big as / not as big as / less popular than |
| irréguliers | good → better → the best ; bad → worse → the worst ; far → further → the furthest |
| Piège francophone | Correct |
|---|
I speak the English. | I speak English. |
I want to go to abroad. | I want to go abroad. |
My country misses me. | I miss my country. |
a homework / homeworks | homework / a piece of homework |
more bigger / more better | bigger / better |
