Devoir surveillé – Compréhension de l'oral : stratégies et entraînement
Développer ses stratégies d'écoute et comprendre des documents sonores authentiques en anglais (programme de 2nde)
Durée : 90 min – Sans document – Sur 20 points · Anglais (LVA) 2ⁿᵈᵉ
Les réponses doivent être rédigées et justifiées. Soigne l'orthographe et la présentation.
Exercice 1 – Compréhension écrite — Learning to listen
(4 pts)Read the text carefully, then answer the four questions in English, in complete sentences.
Learning to listen
Maya had studied English for six years, yet her first morning in Dublin felt like a test she had not revised for. At the bus stop, a woman asked her something that sounded like one long word, and Maya could only smile. Later, in the school office, the secretary said: « You're in room fifteen, on the third floor, and the meeting starts at a quarter to nine. » Maya wrote down « fifty » and arrived, twenty minutes late, in front of a locked door.
That evening she decided to change her method. Instead of trying to catch every single word, she listened to a five-minute news podcast twice a day. The first time, she only wrote down the topic and the names. The second time, she hunted for numbers, dates and the small words that kept escaping her: I'd, they've, wasn't, gonna. She soon noticed that English does not separate words the way French does; it glues them together and swallows the weak ones.
Three weeks later, the same secretary gave her a room number and a time, and Maya repeated them back, in English, without hesitating. She still missed words, of course. But she no longer stopped when she missed one — and that, she realised, was the whole difference.
- a)Where and when does the scene take place? How long had Maya studied English before she arrived?
- b)Explain, in two sentences, why Maya arrived late at the meeting.
- c)What exactly did Maya change in her way of listening? Give the two steps of her new method.
- d)Explain in your own words: « it glues them together and swallows the weak ones ». What does this tell us about spoken English?
Exercice 2 – Langue — les formes contractées
(4 pts)Réécris chaque phrase en développant la forme contractée soulignée, puis justifie ton choix en une ligne (quel indice t'a permis de trancher ?). a) He's been waiting for an hour. — développe 's.
- a)I'd rather take the bus. — développe 'd.
- b)They'd left before the storm. — développe 'd.
- c)She can't have forgotten our meeting. — écris la forme pleine de can't et indique ce que cette phrase exprime.
- d)Correction : 1 pt par item.
Exercice 3 – Langue — nombres, dates et heures
(4 pts)Écris en chiffres ce que le locuteur a prononcé. Respecte le format demandé entre parenthèses. a) nineteen ninety-seven (année, 4 chiffres)
- a)a quarter to eleven in the morning (heure, h:mm)
- b)the twenty-second of March (date, jj/mm)
- c)There were fifty-five thousand spectators, and thirteen of them were injured. (les deux nombres, en chiffres)
- d)Correction : 1 pt par item.
Exercice 4 – Langue — formes relâchées et enchaînements
(4 pts)Chaque phrase reproduit ce qu'on entend à l'oral. Réécris-la en anglais standard, tel qu'on l'écrit dans une copie. a) I'm gonna check the timetable.
- a)You should've told me earlier.
- b)What d'you wanna do tonight?
- c)They musta missed the last train.
- d)Correction : 1 pt par item.
Exercice 5 – Expression écrite — My listening method
(4 pts)Write a single text of 100 to 120 words about a stay in an English-speaking country during which you had trouble understanding spoken English. Your text must satisfy the four requirements below. a) Set the scene in three sentences, in the past simple: where you were, when, and who was speaking to you.
- a)Describe one precise misunderstanding involving a number, a date or a contracted form, and say what its consequence was.
- b)Explain the method you use today, in the present simple, using at least three connectors chosen from: first, then, however, finally, because.
- c)Conclude with two pieces of advice addressed to another student (imperative or you should).
- d)Correction : 1 pt par attendu (situation au prétérit, malentendu précis, méthode au présent avec connecteurs, conseils).
Bon courage !

Corrigé et barème – Compréhension de l'oral : stratégies et entraînement
Développer ses stratégies d'écoute et comprendre des documents sonores authentiques en anglais (programme de 2nde)
Durée : 90 min – Sans document – Sur 20 points · Anglais (LVA) 2ⁿᵈᵉ
Exercice 1 – Compréhension écrite — Learning to listen
(4 pts)- a)The scene takes place in Dublin, on Maya's first morning there, in September / at the beginning of her stay. She had studied English for six years before arriving. (1 pt) (1)
- b)She misheard the room number: the secretary said « fifteen » (15) and Maya wrote down « fifty » (50). She therefore went to the wrong room and arrived twenty minutes late in front of a locked door. (1 pt) (1)
- c)She stopped trying to catch every word. She now listens to the same five-minute podcast twice: the first time for the topic and the names only, the second time for numbers, dates and the small grammatical words (I'd, they've, wasn't, gonna). (1 pt) (1)
- d)Spoken English links words together instead of separating them, and the unstressed (weak) words — auxiliaries, prepositions, articles — are reduced and almost inaudible. Only the stressed words are clearly pronounced, which is why a sentence can sound like one single long word. (1 pt) (1)
Repère — Une question de compréhension se répond toujours avec les mots du texte reformulés, jamais avec ce qu'on imagine du sujet.
Exercice 2 – Langue — les formes contractées
(4 pts)- a)He has been waiting for an hour. Indice : 's est suivi de been + verbe en -ing, donc present perfect → has. (1 pt) (1)
- b)I would rather take the bus. Indice : 'd est suivi de rather + base verbale (take), et non d'un participe passé → would. (1 pt) (1)
- c)They had left before the storm. Indice : 'd est suivi du participe passé left → had (past perfect). (1 pt) (1)
- d)She cannot have forgotten our meeting. La phrase exprime une déduction négative sur le passé : le locuteur est convaincu qu'elle n'a pas oublié. (1 pt) (1)
À retenir — Ce qui suit la contraction décide toujours : participe passé → has / had ; base verbale → will / would.
Exercice 3 – Langue — nombres, dates et heures
(4 pts)- a)1997. Les années se lisent par paires : nineteen (19) / ninety-seven (97). (1 pt) (1)
- b)10:45. a quarter to eleven = onze heures moins le quart ; to annonce l'heure à venir. (1 pt) (1)
- c)22/03. twenty-second = 22 ; March = mars, troisième mois. (1 pt) (1)
- d)55 000 et 13. fifty-five porte l'accent sur FIF- (55, pas 15) et thirteen sur -TEEN (13, pas 30). (1 pt) (1)
Attention — Le couple -TEEN / -ty est le piège le plus coûteux de l'épreuve : l'accent de mot tranche, pas le contexte.
Exercice 4 – Langue — formes relâchées et enchaînements
(4 pts)- a)I am going to check the timetable. (gonna = going to) (1 pt) (1)
- b)You should have told me earlier. (should've = should have ; « should of » est une faute) (1 pt) (1)
- c)What do you want to do tonight? (d'you = do you ; wanna = want to) (1 pt) (1)
- d)They must have missed the last train. (musta = must have, déduction sur le passé) (1 pt) (1)
Erreur fréquente — Les formes relâchées se comprennent à l'oreille mais ne s'écrivent jamais : la copie attend la forme pleine.
Exercice 5 – Expression écrite — My listening method
(4 pts)- a)Attendus : trois phrases au prétérit, lieu + moment + interlocuteur clairement identifiés. Proposition : « Last summer I spent two weeks in Brighton with a host family. On my first evening, my host mother explained the rules of the house. She spoke quickly and I understood almost nothing. » (1 pt) (1)
- b)Attendus : un malentendu précis et son effet concret. Proposition : « She told me that dinner was at half past six, but I heard « half past seven ». I came downstairs an hour late and everybody had already finished eating. » (1 pt) (1)
- c)Attendus : présent simple, au moins trois connecteurs. Proposition : « Today I work differently. First, I read the title and I write down five words I expect to hear. Then I listen once for the situation, and a second time for the numbers and the dates. However, I never stop on a word I do not know, because the next sentence often explains it. » (1 pt) (1)
- d)Attendus : deux conseils à un camarade, impératif ou you should. Proposition : « Write the numbers in figures immediately, and never translate while you are listening. You should also listen to the same short podcast twice: the second time, you always hear more. » (1 pt) (1)
Le point clé — Une expression écrite se note d'abord sur le respect des quatre attendus : temps imposés, longueur, connecteurs et point de vue.
