Citizenship: rights and duties
- a citizen / citizenship ; a community, society.
- Rights : the right to vote, the right to education, freedom of speech, equal rights, a fair trial.
- Duties : to obey the law, to pay taxes, to respect others, to serve on a jury.
- the right to + nom ou BV ; pluriel duties.
- Repères : Human Rights (1948), Rights of the Child (1989) ; vote à 18 ans au Royaume-Uni.

Volunteering
- to volunteer at / for ; a volunteer = un bénévole (pas « déterminé »).
- a charity ; to raise money for ; to donate / a donation.
- a food bank, a shelter, a fundraiser ; to give up one's time.
- Repères : Red Nose Day, Children in Need.

Getting involved
- to get involved in, to commit to, to take action.
- to stand up for, to campaign for, to protest against, to speak out.
- to sign a petition, a demonstration, a march, a strike.
- to make a difference, to raise awareness of.
- Préposition + V-ing : involved in protecting.
- Malala Yousafzai (Nobel 2014), Greta Thunberg (2018).

Giving an opinion
- I think / I believe (that)…, In my opinion, To my mind, It seems to me that…
- I strongly believe, As far as I'm concerned, Personally.
- I agree / I disagree with you ; I'm in favour of / against + nom ou V-ing.
- I think so / I don't think so.

Building an argument
- Cause : because, since, as.
- Conséquence : so, that's why, therefore.
- Opposition : but, however, even though, whereas, on the other hand.
- Exemple : for example, for instance, such as.
- Ajout / conclusion : moreover, what's more / to sum up, in conclusion.
- Récit d'un engagement : prétérit — volunteered, raised, campaigned ; stood up for, fought, spoke out, went on strike, gave up.

Traps
I am agree→ I agree.the right of vote→ the right to vote.- a demonstration = une manifestation ; a volunteer = un bénévole.
- right = droit / à droite / juste ; duty ≠ homework.
L'essentiel
- Citizenship = rights (to vote, to education, freedom of speech) + duties (to obey the law, to pay taxes).
- To volunteer at a shelter, to raise money for a charity, to donate : le bénévolat se dit avec ces verbes.
- S'engager : to get involved in, to stand up for, to campaign for, to protest against, to make a difference.
- Opinion : I think / In my opinion / I strongly believe ; I agree, jamais « I am agree ».
- Argument = opinion + because + for instance + so + however + to sum up.
