  • Empire = domination ; Commonwealth = association libre. Les États-Unis ne sont pas membres.
L'essentiel
  • The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 states, born in 1949, mostly former British colonies.
  • Its Head is symbolic: Elizabeth II (1952-2022), then King Charles III; only 15 realms have the King as head of state.
  • Members share values (democracy, human rights, the rule of law) and a heritage (English, cricket, the Games).
  • Il y a = there is / there are ; les dates se racontent au prétérit (became, joined, left).
  • Nationalities take a capital letter: Canadian, Pakistani, Maltese, British.
