Exercice 1 — Compréhension écrite : rendre compte d'un document authentique

/ 6 pts

Read the article, then answer the questions in English. Mediate the text: report and reformulate in your own words — do not copy whole sentences.

  1. (a) In your own words, summarise in TWO sentences the main issue raised by this article.
  2. (b) Mediate the point of view of the conservationists AND that of the farmers, using a different reporting verb for each (e.g. argue, warn, condemn, complain, point out).
  3. (c) Quote the sentence in which the author transposes a spoken, emotional remark, and explain what register it belongs to.
  4. (d) What conclusion do the experts share? Reformulate it without copying the text.
  5. (e) Find in the text ONE word or phrase meaning 'reintroducing wild animals into nature'.

Exercice 2 — Transposer une donnée chiffrée en texte fluide

/ 4 pts

Transpose the following data into a short paragraph in English (3 to 4 sentences). Comment on the EVOLUTION — do not merely list the figures — and use at least two verbs of variation and one logical connector.

  1. Share of households owning an electric vehicle in the region:
  2. 2018: 2%   |   2021: 9%   |   2023: 21%   |   2025: 38%.
  3. Wording note: choose verbs such as to soar, to climb, to more than double, to reach; add a connector (indeed, as a result, in just a few years).

Exercice 3 — Synthétiser deux documents autour d'une problématique

/ 5 pts

Two short documents are given below. Write a SHORT synthesis (4 to 5 sentences) confronting them around a common problem. Organise by ideas, not document by document; reformulate, do not copy.

  1. Write your synthesis. You must: (1) state a common problematic linking both documents; (2) bring out their convergence or divergence with appropriate connectors (whereas, both, however, ultimately); (3) reformulate the key ideas in your own words.

Exercice 4 — Expression écrite : prendre position de façon argumentée

/ 5 pts

Write in English.

  1. Topic (linked to the axis 'Identities and exchanges' / human–environment relations): 'Some cities are now limiting the number of tourists allowed each day. Is it fair to restrict tourism in order to protect a place and its inhabitants?'
  2. Write a structured essay of about 130-150 words. Take a clear stance, support it with at least two arguments illustrated by examples, use a range of logical connectors, and end with a nuanced conclusion.
  3. Assessment: relevance and organisation of the argument; richness and accuracy of the language (B2/C1); use of varied connectors and reporting/hedging where relevant.

(b) Exemple attendu : Conservationists argue that wolves restore a fragile ecological balance and help forests regenerate, and they point out the example of Yellowstone. Farmers, by contrast, condemn the policy as reckless and warn that wolves are already killing their livestock; they also complain that compensation is insufficient. (Deux reporting verbs distincts et adaptés exigés — 2 pts)
(c) Citation : "City people romanticise the wolf, but they don't have to count their dead sheep at dawn." C'est un registre familier / oral et émotionnel (discours direct, amertume marquée), que le médiateur devrait transposer en registre neutre (ex. : The shepherd resentfully argued that urban dwellers idealise the wolf without bearing the practical cost of its return). (1 pt)
(d) Les experts reconnaissent qu'il n'existe pas de solution simple : la réintroduction ne peut réussir contre la volonté des populations locales ; l'enjeu réel est la coexistence. (Reformulation personnelle exigée — 1 pt)
(e) Rewilding (the return of wolves / reintroducing predators). (0,5 pt)

Exercice 2 — Transposer une donnée chiffrée en texte fluide
Exemple de production attendue : In just seven years, electric-vehicle ownership in the region has soared. From a marginal 2% of households in 2018, the figure climbed to 9% in 2021 and then more than doubled to 21% in 2023. By 2025, it had reached 38%, meaning that almost four households in ten now own an electric car — a striking sign that the transition is accelerating.
Critères (4 pts) : commentaire de l'évolution et non simple lecture (1,5 pt) ; au moins deux verbes de variation corrects, ex. soar, climb, more than double, reach (1 pt) ; chiffres exacts et fidèles (0,5 pt) ; fluidité et connecteur logique pertinent (1 pt). On pénalise toute donnée chiffrée déformée.

Exercice 3 — Synthétiser deux documents autour d'une problématique
Exemple de production attendue : Both documents address the ambivalent impact of affordable mass tourism on European cities. Whereas Document A celebrates the way cheap flights have opened travel to younger and poorer people, fostering cultural exchange and creating jobs, Document B warns that this very accessibility is choking historic centres, fuelling carbon emissions and driving local residents out through soaring rents. The two sources therefore agree on the scale of the phenomenon but diverge sharply on its desirability. Ultimately, they raise the same underlying question: how can the undeniable benefits of travel be reconciled with its social and environmental cost?

• Une gamme de connecteurs logiques variés (however, moreover, whereas, as a result, admittedly… however).
• Une conclusion nuancée qui dépasse le simple oui/non.
• Une langue de niveau B2/C1 correcte et idiomatique (pas de calque du français).

Exemple de production :
In my view, limiting the number of visitors is not only fair but necessary. Admittedly, tourism brings vital income and jobs; cities such as Venice depend heavily on it. However, when crowds become overwhelming, the very heritage tourists come to admire is put at risk, and residents are gradually driven out by rising rents and noise. Moreover, daily caps already work elsewhere: national parks have long restricted access to protect fragile ecosystems, and few would call that unfair. Critics argue that such measures are elitist, since only the wealthy can secure a place. This objection deserves attention, yet a transparent booking system could keep access open to all. Ultimately, protecting a place and its inhabitants should take priority over unlimited consumption: a city is a living community, not merely a backdrop for photographs.

Barème indicatif : pertinence et structure de l'argumentation (2 pts) ; richesse et correction de la langue (2 pts) ; variété des connecteurs et registre maîtrisé (1 pt).
