Exercice 1 — Compréhension de l'écrit : un article

/ 4 pts

Document 1. Extract from a British science website for young readers.
« In 1796, Edward Jenner, a country doctor in Gloucestershire, England, noticed that milkmaids who had caught cowpox, a mild disease, never caught smallpox, a terrible illness that killed one child in three. He decided to test his idea. He took some liquid from a cowpox blister and injected it into the arm of James Phipps, an eight-year-old boy. A few weeks later, he exposed James to smallpox: the boy did not fall ill. Jenner called his method « vaccination », from vacca, the Latin word for cow. At first, many doctors laughed at him and newspapers published cartoons of people turning into cows. But the method worked, and in 1980, the World Health Organization declared that smallpox had disappeared from the planet — the first disease ever eliminated by humans. »

  1. What did Jenner notice about milkmaids, and what did this observation lead him to test?
  2. Describe Jenner's experiment in two sentences (who, what, result).
  3. How did people react at first? Quote the sentence that shows it.
  4. Explain in English why the year 1980 is important in this story, and why the text calls it « the first disease ever eliminated by humans ».
