1

Jobs and workplaces : parler des métiers

Règle. Pour dire un métier : be + a / an + métier. L'article est obligatoire en anglais : She is a plumber (elle est plombière). An devant un son de voyelle : an engineer, an architect, an hour… mais a university (/ju/).

Questions utiles : What do you do (for a living)? — Que faites-vous dans la vie ? / What does your mother do? — Que fait ta mère ? (jamais What is your job? à l'oral, trop direct).

Astuce. Beaucoup de métiers viennent d'un verbe + -er / -or : to design → a designer, to translate → a translator, to bake → a baker. Un job = un emploi ; work = le travail (indénombrable : a lot of work, jamais a work) ; a career = une carrière.
2
