Durée : 120 min – Sans document – Sur 20 points · Anglais (LVA) 1ʳᵉ
Les réponses doivent être rédigées et justifiées. Soigne l'orthographe et la présentation.
Exercice 1 – Reading comprehension
(4 pts)Read the text carefully, then answer the four questions in English, in full sentences. When Léa arrived in Manchester last September, she had very little information about student life in Britain. The university had sent her a few emails, but most of them were about paperwork. Her room in the hall of residence contained hardly any furniture: a bed, a desk and one chair. She had plenty of enthusiasm and almost no money. During the first week, every international student was invited to a welcome meeting. Each of them received a booklet full of practical advice: how to open a bank account, where to buy cheap food, which buses to take. Léa found the booklet far more useful than all the websites she had read at home, because the information in it had been written by students who lived in the city. The good news was that her flatmates were friendly. Both of her neighbours, a Scottish girl and a Nigerian boy, offered to help her. They spent a whole afternoon showing her the city centre. « You'll make a lot of progress in English here, » the Scottish girl said, « because you can't escape it. » Six months later, Léa still makes mistakes, but she has made a great deal of progress. She no longer writes 'an information' or 'three homeworks'. Her teachers say she has quite a few good ideas, and she now gives advice to the newcomers herself.
- a)What did Léa's room contain when she arrived, and what did she have very little of? (1 pt)
- b)Why was the booklet more useful than the websites? Justify with a quotation from the text. (1 pt)
- c)What does the Scottish girl mean when she says « because you can't escape it »? (1 pt)
- d)Explain the phrase « quite a few good ideas » and say why 'an information' and 'three homeworks' are mistakes. (1 pt)
Exercice 2 – Quantifiers
(4 pts)Complete each sentence with the correct quantifier chosen from the brackets, and copy the whole sentence.
- a)She didn't give us ___ information about the exam. (some / any)
- b)___ solutions work, so you can choose either one. (Both / Every / Each)
- c)We had ___ time to visit the museum, so we only saw two rooms. (little / a little)
- d)He has made ___ progress since September. (a great deal of / a great number of)
Exercice 3 – Articles
(4 pts)Complete with a, an, the, or leave the blank empty if no article is needed. Write Ø when no article is required.
- a)My uncle is ___ architect and works for ___ company based in Leeds.
- b)___ British Museum is free, but you must book ___ ticket online.
- c)___ children learn languages faster than ___ adults.
- d)After the accident, he spent three weeks in ___ hospital and missed ___ school.
Exercice 4 – Error correction
(4 pts)Each sentence contains one mistake linked to countable and uncountable nouns. Rewrite it correctly and explain the correction in one short sentence in French.
- a)She gave me two informations about the timetable.
- b)The police is investigating the robbery.
- c)We bought three new furnitures for the kitchen.
- d)He has made a big progress in maths this year.
Exercice 5 – Written expression
(4 pts)A French student is about to spend a term in your school. Write an email giving them practical advice about the first weeks. Respect the four requirements below.
- a)Length and format: 120 to 150 words, with an opening and a closing formula appropriate to an email. (1 pt)
- b)Language: use at least six different quantifiers among much, many, a lot of, plenty of, a few, few, a little, little, hardly any, every, each, both, all. (1 pt)
- c)Vocabulary: use correctly at least three of these uncountable nouns — information, advice, news, furniture, homework, progress. (1 pt)
- d)Organisation: use at least three connectors (first of all, however, besides, finally) and end with one piece of personal advice. (1 pt)
Bon courage !

Corrigé et barème – Quantificateurs et déterminants
Durée : 120 min – Sans document – Sur 20 points · Anglais (LVA) 1ʳᵉ
Exercice 1 – Reading comprehension
(4 pts)- a)Her room contained hardly any furniture — only a bed, a desk and one chair. She had very little information about student life in Britain (and almost no money). (1)
- b)Because it had been written by students who actually lived in the city: « the information in it had been written by students who lived in the city ». It was therefore practical and reliable, unlike the websites she had read in France. (1)
- c)She means that in Manchester Léa is surrounded by English all day long: she has no choice but to use it constantly, and this permanent exposure will make her improve quickly. (1)
- d)« Quite a few » means « pas mal de », i.e. a fairly large number — not « very few ». 'An information' and 'three homeworks' are wrong because information and homework are uncountable in English: they take no a/an and no plural -s. One should write « a piece of information » and « three pieces of homework ». (1)
Exercice 2 – Quantifiers
(4 pts)- a)She didn't give us any information about the exam. (1)
- b)Both solutions work, so you can choose either one. (1)
- c)We had little time to visit the museum, so we only saw two rooms. (1)
- d)He has made a great deal of progress since September. — a great deal of accompagne un indénombrable ; a great number of irait avec un pluriel. (1)
Erreur fréquente — Oublier que l'article a devant few ou little inverse le sens : a little time signifie « un peu », little time signifie « pas assez ».
Exercice 3 – Articles
(4 pts)- a)My uncle is an architect and works for a company based in Leeds. (1)
- b)The British Museum is free, but you must book a ticket online. — the devant un nom d'institution identifié, a devant un billet quelconque. (1)
- c)Ø children learn languages faster than Ø adults. — généralité au pluriel : article zéro. (1)
- d)After the accident, he spent three weeks in Ø hospital and missed Ø school.
Exercice 4 – Error correction
(4 pts)- a)She gave me two pieces of information about the timetable. (1)
- b)The police are investigating the robbery. (1)
- c)We bought three new pieces of furniture for the kitchen. (1)
- d)He has made great progress in maths this year. — progress est indénombrable : ni a, ni -s ; on dit make progress. (1)
Attention — Six noms suffisent à faire perdre des points à l'écrit : information, advice, news, furniture, homework, progress — jamais de pluriel, jamais de a/an.
Exercice 5 – Written expression
(4 pts)- a)Attendus : e-mail de 120 à 150 mots, avec Hi / Dear + prénom au début et Best wishes / See you soon + prénom à la fin ; registre amical mais correct ; mots comptés et longueur respectée. (1)
- b)Attendus : six quantificateurs différents, employés correctement selon la nature du nom (much/a little + indénombrable, many/a few + pluriel) et selon le sens (few ≠ a few). (1)
- c)Attendus : trois indénombrables au moins, sans -s et sans a/an, avec le verbe au singulier (the news is…) ou un partitif (a piece of advice). (1)
- d)Proposition rédigée : « Hi Camille, I'm really glad you are coming to our school next term. First of all, don't worry: you don't need much information before you arrive, because each new student gets a welcome booklet with plenty of practical advice. However, there are a few things you should know now. We have a lot of homework every evening, so bring a good laptop; there is hardly any furniture in the study rooms, but both libraries are open until seven. All the teachers are friendly and most of them speak a little French. Besides, the news about the exchange programme is excellent: every student from last year made great progress in English. Finally, my own piece of advice is simple — say yes to each invitation, even when you feel shy. See you soon, Alex » (142 mots). (1)
