Award 1 pt per correct sentence. Deduct 0.5 if grammar is correct but word order is wrong.

Exercice 3 — Art Analysis: Describing a Visual
Corrigé :
1. Description (2 pts): Accept any accurate description using 'foreground/background', e.g. 'In the foreground, a lone figure stands with their back to the camera. In the background, a large, crumbling wall covered in old posters dominates the image.' (1 pt vocabulary + 1 pt grammar)

2. Analysis (2 pts): The answer must use the structure 'The use of black-and-white… creates…' and name an emotion, e.g. 'The use of black-and-white photography creates a feeling of melancholy, isolation, or timelessness.' (1 pt structure + 1 pt relevant interpretation)

3. Interpretation (2 pts): Award points for use of opinion phrase AND a plausible social/political reading, e.g. 'In my opinion, the photographer is denouncing anonymity and the loss of individual identity in modern society.' (1 pt opinion phrase + 1 pt coherent argument)

Exercice 4 — Art as Social Commentary: Short Essay
Corrigé :
Content (3 pts): The paragraph must identify the artist, their medium, the social issue addressed, and include a specific work. Award 1 pt for each correct factual element (artist + medium, social issue, specific work).

Language (3 pts):
• 1 pt — comparative or superlative used correctly (e.g. 'one of the most powerful photographers')
• 1 pt — opinion phrase used correctly (e.g. 'In my opinion', 'I find his work')
• 1 pt — concession structure used correctly (e.g. 'Although some argue that… I believe that…')

Model answer (Banksy): 'Banksy is one of the most famous contemporary street artists in the world. His anonymous works appear on public walls and address issues such as war, inequality and capitalism. His piece Girl with a Balloon (2002) shows a small girl reaching for a red heart — one of his most moving images. Although some critics argue that his work is vandalism, I believe it serves a vital social function. By placing art in public spaces, he reaches people who would never visit a gallery. In my opinion, his work is more powerful than many pieces you find in museums precisely because it is unexpected and accessible.'
