Deux villes, deux pays

Repères. London est la capitale du United Kingdom (the UK) : environ 8,9 millions d'habitants, sur la Thames. New York City (NYC) est la plus grande ville des United States (the USA), environ 8,3 millions d'habitants, mais la capitale américaine est Washington, D.C. Un habitant de Londres = a Londoner ; de New York = a New Yorker.

New York : les lieux à connaître

Repère. New York a cinq boroughs (arrondissements) : Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx et Staten Island. Manhattan est une île, d'où ses skyscrapers (gratte-ciel).

Astuce. Vocabulaire des villes : a skyscraper, a borough, a neighbourhood, a landmark (monument célèbre), a crossroads, a skyline (la silhouette des gratte-ciel).

Comparer deux villes : le comparatif

Règle. Adjectif court (1 syllabe, ou 2 syllabes en -y) : adjectif + -er + than. Adjectif long : more + adjectif + than. Égalité : as + adjectif + as. Infériorité : less + adjectif + than.

Attention ! more old, more big sont faux : older, bigger. Et « que » = than, jamais that. Pour insister : much older, far more expensive.

Le superlatif : the tallest, the most famous

Règle. Adjectif court : the + adjectif + -est. Adjectif long : the most + adjectif. Irréguliers : the best, the worst, the farthest. Après un superlatif, « de » se dit in devant un lieu (in the world, in the city) et of devant un groupe (of all, of the five boroughs).
Exemples. The Shard is the tallest building in the UK.Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs.Camden has the best street food in London.
