Parler d'une habitude passée révolue : I used to play

Parler d'une habitude ou d'un état passé qui n'existe plus : used to + base verbale, et ne pas le confondre avec be used to.

Sens

  • used to + BV = « avant, je… (mais plus maintenant) » : habitude ou état passé révolu.
  • I used to play the drums. There used to be a cinema here. She used to be shy.
  • Test : on peut ajouter but not any more.
  • Seulement au passé ; habitude présente = présent simple + usually.

Formes

  • Affirmatif : used to + BV, invariable (jamais uses to, jamais used to played).
  • Négatif : didn't use to + BV (sans d) ou never used to.
  • Question : Did + sujet + use to + BV ? Where did you use to live? Réponse : Yes, I did.
  • There used to be / There didn't use to be / Did there use to be…?
  • Prononciation /ˈjuːst tə/ : le d est muet.

Before and now

  • used to (avant) ↔ présent simple (maintenant) : People used to write letters; now they send messages.
  • Marqueurs du présent : now, nowadays, these days, still.
  • any more en fin de phrase négative ; no longer avant le verbe : I don't play any more = I no longer play.

Used to, prétérit, would

  • Prétérit obligatoire avec une date ou un nombre de fois : I went to Rome in 2019. I saw it twice.
  • would + BV : habitude passée répétée dans un récit (Every summer we would swim), jamais un état (we would live).
  • used to : habitude OU état, sans date.

Be used to, get used to

  • be used to + nom / V-ing = être habitué à : I'm used to getting up early.
  • get used to + nom / V-ing = s'habituer à : You'll get used to the cold.
  • to est ici une préposition → V-ing ; be se conjugue à tous les temps (wasn't used to, will get used to).
