Document 1. Extract from an interview in a British youth magazine.
« Every month, we ask a young person the same question: what would you do if you were the Prime Minister for one day? This month: Kofi, 15, from Glasgow.
« If I were the Prime Minister, I would start with school. If lessons began at ten, teenagers would sleep more and learn better — scientists say so. Then I would make public transport free for everyone under 18. If buses cost nothing, fewer parents would drive their kids to school, and the air would be cleaner. Finally, I would give every town a free music studio. If I had had one when I was twelve, I might be a famous producer now! Would I enjoy the job? Honestly, no. If I really were the Prime Minister, I wouldn't sleep at night. One day would be enough. »

1. What question does the magazine ask every month, and who answers it this month?
2. List Kofi's three ideas in the order he gives them.
3. According to Kofi, what would happen if buses cost nothing? Give the two consequences.
4. Would Kofi like to be the Prime Minister for real? Justify with a quotation from the text.

Document 2. Survey in a secondary school in Bristol: « If you could change one thing about your school, what would you change? » (200 pupils).

1. How many pupils would like a shorter school day? Express this number as a percentage of the pupils surveyed.
2. Which is the least popular answer, and how many pupils chose it?
3. In the comment about the canteen, identify the verb in the preterite and the verb after « would », then explain in French why these two forms are used.
4. Write one sentence of your own, in the 2nd conditional, giving YOUR answer to the survey question.

2. Transforme cette hypothèse réelle en hypothèse irréelle : « If the shop is open, I will buy some bread. »
3. Réécris avec « unless » : « The team would lose if the captain didn't play. »
4. Corrige les trois erreurs : « If I would be a teacher, I would to give no homework, and my pupils will love me. »

1. Traduis : « Si je savais cuisiner, j'ouvrirais un restaurant. »

Your English teacher asks you to write a short text (80 words minimum) entitled « If I could live anywhere in the world ». Follow the four steps and use the 2nd conditional in each one.

1. Say where you would live and why, with one sentence in the 2nd conditional.
2. Describe two things you would do every day there (two sentences with « would »).
3. Explain one thing that would be difficult, using « wouldn't » or « unless ».
4. Conclude with a piece of advice to a friend who wanted to move abroad, using « If I were you, … ».
