Ce cours de anglais en quatrième sur « Le sport et la compétition » suit le programme officiel de anglais de quatrième. Les noms de sports (sports vocabulary)

Astuce. Les sports en -ing viennent d'un verbe (to swim → swimming, to ski → skiing). Les personnes : a footballer, a swimmer, a cyclist, a gymnast, a boxer, an athlete.

Play, do ou go ? Les trois verbes du sport

Règle. Le verbe dépend du type de sport : play + sports avec ballon/balle ou jeux à deux équipes ; go + sports en -ing (activités où l'on se déplace) ; do + arts martiaux, gymnastique, athlétisme et activités sans ballon ni -ing.

Attention ! Jamais d'article après play devant un sport : play tennis (pas play the tennis). Mais pour un instrument : play the guitar. « Faire du sport » en général = do sport / do exercise.

Astuce. Le score se lit avec to ou nil : 3–1 = « three one » ; 2–0 = « two nil » ; 1–1 = « one all ».

Gagner, perdre, marquer : win, lose, beat, score

Règle. On gagne un match (win a match) mais on bat un adversaire (beat a team). Ne dis jamais win a team.

Attention ! « gagner » un match = win ; « gagner » de l'argent = earn. Et le nom : a win (une victoire) / a defeat (une défaite) / a winner, a loser.

Raconter un match au prétérit

Méthode. Un compte rendu de match suit toujours le même plan : le contexte (Last Saturday, our team played against…), le déroulement (In the first half… At half-time… In the last minute…), le résultat (We won / lost / drew…), le sentiment (The crowd went wild. We were over the moon / gutted.).
Exemple. Last Sunday the Red Foxes played against Ashford United. Ashford scored first, but Malik equalised just before half-time. In the last minute, the goalkeeper saved a penalty and we won 2–1. The supporters cheered for ten minutes!
