Cinq pays anglophones sur la carte
Règle. Un English-speaking country est un pays où l'anglais est langue officielle ou principale. Ce chapitre présente the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand et Ireland. Les noms de pays, de nationalités et de langues prennent toujours une majuscule.
Attention ! the USA, the United States, the UK prennent l'article the (noms pluriels ou composés) ; Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand non.

Astuce. Question type : What's the capital of Australia? → Canberra is the capital of Australia. Quatre capitales sur cinq ne sont pas la plus grande ville !

Structures. She is Canadian. (adjectif, pas d'article) — He is an American. (nom : article possible) — Australian food, the Irish flag (adjectif devant le nom).
Attention ! England ≠ Britain ≠ the UK : l'Angleterre est un pays du Royaume-Uni. Et l'Irlande (Dublin) est indépendante ; l'Irlande du Nord (Belfast) fait partie du Royaume-Uni.

Attention ! come from prend un -s à la 3e personne : He comes from Texas. Et from ne s'oublie pas : Where are you? = « où es-tu ? », pas « d'où viens-tu ? ».

Astuce. Le drapeau britannique s'appelle the Union Jack ; on le retrouve dans le coin des drapeaux australien et néo-zélandais, anciennes colonies britanniques.

Un peu de culture
- Independence Day : le 4 juillet, fête nationale américaine (indépendance en 1776).
- St Patrick's Day : le 17 mars, fête irlandaise ; on porte du vert.
- Canada Day : le 1er juillet.
- Australia Day : le 26 janvier — en plein été, car les saisons sont inversées dans l'hémisphère sud.
- Les Maori sont le peuple d'origine de la Nouvelle-Zélande ; le haka est leur danse guerrière, célèbre grâce aux All Blacks (rugby).
- Les Aboriginal peoples vivent en Australie depuis plus de 50 000 ans.
