MotSensExemple
Astuce. Compte sur tes doigts : 2 → both, 0 → neither, 1 au choix → either.
2

On dit both + nom ou both of + the / my / these + nom ; devant un pronom, of est obligatoire : both of us, both of them.
StructureExemple
both + nomBoth windows are broken.
both (of) the / my + nomBoth (of) my grandmothers live in Leeds.
both of + pronomBoth of us forgot our keys.
sujet + both + verbeThe girls both play chess.
sujet + be + bothThey are both vegetarian.
Attention ! the both n'existe pas : on dit both children ou both the children, jamais the both children. Et both of they est impossible : both of them.
Astuce. Avec un pronom sujet, both se place après be (We are both tired) mais avant un verbe ordinaire (We both like jazz).
3

Neither : ni l'un ni l'autre

Règle. neither = aucun des deux. Il est suivi d'un nom singulier (neither shop) ou de of + pluriel (neither of the shops, neither of them).
Exemples. Neither road leads to the castle.Neither of my grandparents speaks English.Neither of us has a bike.
Attention ! Piège numéro un des francophones : Neither of them doesn't know. Comme en anglais une seule négation suffit, on écrit Neither of them knows. Pas de not, pas de don't !
Astuce. neither = not … either : I know neither of them = I don't know either of them.

Exemples. You can sit at either table.Either of these chargers works with my phone. There were shops on either side of the street. (= des deux côtés)
Règle. En fin de phrase négative, either traduit « non plus » : Dad can't cook, and Mum can't either.
I love reggae.I love reggae too.Me too. / So do I.
I don't like reggae.I don't like reggae either.Me neither. / Neither do I.
Attention ! « Moi non plus » = Me neither, pas Me too.

Les paires : both…and / neither…nor / either…or

StructureSensExemple
both … and …à la fois … et …She is both clever and funny.
neither … nor …ni … ni …Neither the lift nor the stairs were lit.
either … or …soit … soit … / ou bien … ou bien …Either you hurry or we miss the train.
Accord du verbe. Avec both … and, le verbe est au pluriel : Both the singer and the drummer come from Bristol. Avec neither … nor et either … or, le verbe s'accorde avec l'élément le plus proche : Neither the cat nor the dog is allowed on the sofa.
Attention !
